A four disc set released by Dirtier Promotions, UK, 24 Hours - A Day of Seals is a massive, hard to digest collection of work made with "PowerBooks, Guitars & EMS Synthi A". It contains 15 tracks, ranging from 6 to 43 minutes in length. Heavily processed guitar loops dominate this collection. The pace is generally very slow, evoking the feel of sludge rock groups such as The Melvins, Earth, or Burning Witch. The effect on the receptive listener is very relaxing despite the oppressive, even crushing sound of the recordings.
Relatively speaking, some of the material here is very accessible, including the what is in my opinion the stand out track of this box set: Walrus Band. The second track on the fourth disc, Walrus Band is a 24 minute epic featuring a spectacularly heavy guitar loop which lasts for the entirety of the piece, sometimes dominating the mix, but just as often moving to the background as other sounds demand our attention.
This set clocks in at over 3 and a half hours. I have owned it for over a year now and am still coming to grips with it. My initial reaction was very unfavorable and it's saving grace was disc 4, which was an immediate favorite of mine. I decided this set to be worth purchasing for it's fourth disc alone; I was wrong, all four discs are great! I now realize I was expecting these discs to be enjoyable in the same relentless way that Pulse Demon or Oersted are, but instead of that kind of intense endurance test, this set is much more contemplative and heavy; the irony being that my initial distaste for this set was that it was actually less unpleasant than I had been expecting.
