Opposite Records say: Merzzow combines animal concepts and deconstructions of 20th century music, ambient drones and a deep grinding groove, synth tones and harsh bursts of liquid electricity in a varied and dynamic 70 minutes that is sure to please all you fans.
I say: Great album! Showcases the new-found range of sounds and structures that Merzbow began to explore with his powerbooks. My only complaint is that I would have made Elephant Song the closing track instead of the opener. Inside Looking Out Pt.1 is stunning, beautiful. Processed melodic droning guitar loops are joined by rythmic noise loops in a 9 minute track that starts off quietly and builds to a great intensity. Koshinzuka is a short piece of rotating tones, synthetic textures, and stereo manipulation. Music Machine is another 9 minute epic of processed loops and guitar. I'm tempted to suggest that Fennesz had something to do with this release. And with Horse, we find Akita-sensei revisiting his late 80's style of brutality in a new school laptop way. Also, some of the sounds on this album re-appear on Merzbeat and Ikebukuro Dada. There is a lot to like about this cd. Recommended.
