Some words from Masami Akita about this release, edited slightly for clarity:
Puroland is the name of a Sanrio amusement park which is dedicated to
Hello-Kitty, located in suburbs of Tokyo. "Pilgrimage to Puroland" is the melancholic first song. I played once this song live in Tokyo. "Celebration Day" is inspired by the song "Celebration Day" of Led Zeppelin (from their album "3"), once I played this song at Fandango, Osaka. "Pleasant Valley Monday" is inspired by the song "Pleasant Valley Sunday" of The Monkees (from their album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones LTD"). "War Frog" was originally called "Boom Boom Bomb" because of the sound of the bass loop. I played this live many times.
A guitar rings out a bittersweet meloncholic riff, looping into eternity, soon accompanied by heavy drone noise and additional processed guitar, and slowly but surely the original riff disappears into the mass of sound. This is how Puroland opens, and it's a strong start. Celebration Day is the kind of track that you'll either love or hate, because if the main guitar loop doesn't appeal to you, you'll quickly tire of it, even as it is surrounded with waves of noise. I love it. War Frog is at least in part constructed out of source material used on Frog+. There's a certain gritty quality to this cd, it has a more organic feel than, say, Amlux.
This cd is one of my personal favorites and by far my most listened to Merzbow cd of the laptop era.
